Massive response to Lib Dem King Alfred petition12.00.00am GMT Sun 30th Mar 2003
Lib Dem Councillor Jenny Barnard-Langston and Councillor Mark Barnard have presented a massive petition to the City Mayor objecting to the proposals for development on the King Alfred site. Mark said: "We ensured through our regular Focus news that residents were aware of the exhibition to take place and since residents were offered a choice of three designs to choose from and no opportunity to object to them all and we offered them that opportunity. We have had a huge response and we have pledged to block these proposals should we win the election." Jenny said: "We have had a number of buildings put on hold (including Medina House) to await the outcome of the consultants report on a 'tall buildings strategy' for the city and yet the council have pushed these proposals forward to include a 38 storey block! The council has ignored public opinion, the election offers the opportunity for residents to kick them out and have a fresh start." "The Liberal Democrats will not let this or any other massive development on the King Alfred site to go ahead. This site is a leisure site and we are determined that an appropriate use of the site will be pursued with the support of residents."
