Just 12 per cent of rubbish produced in the City is recycled or composted, compared to a Government target of 17 per cent.

Figures from the Department of Environment & Rural Affairs reveal just how far behind the City is on environmental issues such as recycling. The statistics come at a time when the Council is landfilling 87% of its waste and worse still is seeking to burn much of it by proposing two new incinerators in East Sussex. Liberal Democrats are fighting the proposals for the incinerators and say that not enough progress is being made on recycling. Councillor Paul Elgood said: 'There is no leadership for recycling at the City Council and more must be done. Where schemes have been introduced they have always been well used. New ones are following but the rate simply isn't fast enough.'
