Working with residents, Waterloo Street will see action to tackle ongoing waste and rubbish problems.

At tonight's Environment Committee, Councillors agreed to introduce communal bins in the street, with collections five times a week. A full recycling scheme will also follow.

In the consultation, 68% of residents were in favour; 30% against and 2% no comment - with 38% of households expressing a view.

Brunswick & Adelaide Councillor Paul Elgood said: 'Sorting out Waterloo Street's waste problems has really engaged local residents. We had a good debate over communal bins, and in the end the majority of residents wanted to see them introduced. We hope this action will have the desired effect. We will be monitoring it closely.'
