Ming Campbell on the fighting in Middle East

10.14.13pm GMT Sun 6th Aug 2006

Ming Campbell MP

We are witnessing the serious destabilisation of the Middle East. It has the potential to deteriorate still further.

My view is that the security council of the United Nations must call for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire. The indiscriminate firing of rockets into Israel by Hizbullah is wholly unacceptable, as is the targeted destruction of the infrastructure of Lebanon by the Israeli government. While these activities persist there is scope only for the violence to escalate.
